Introducing ... Schedule HC - Thrift Holding Companies

After a small summer hiatus, we're back to blogging. Each quarter we update our taxonomies to reflect the changes in the Call Reports. This past quarter, the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) introduced a new report schedule - "HC - THRIFT HOLDING COMPANY".

For small research companies, Thrift Holding Company data was always hard to find. This is a great addition from the OTS to improve the transparency of Thrift Holding Companies. This schedule is completed by all Thrifts with Holding Companies, with the exception of Holding Companies regulated by the Federal Reserve.

On the summary page, when possible, we've linked the Thrift to their Holding Company for quick access to the Holding Company information. Soon we’ll integrate this information in our widgets.

This new report has facts and figures that I'm sure will be of interest. It also provides a more complete picture of a Thrift Financial Institution. A thank-you to the Office of Thrift Supervision for making this useful information available.

Changes to Our TARP Lists

We’ve been following and publishing data concerning the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) since the Treasury started releasing data into the public domain. It has grown in many ways, and we’ve had to adjust as the number of programs and nature of the transactions have changed.

Our focus has been on Financial Institutions. As such we made an early decision to carry only TARP programs affecting Financial Institutions. Recently, we have decided to focus entirely on the Capital Purchase Program (CPP).

A couple of weeks ago we started to see Repayment Transactions and Final Dispositions appear in the TARP Report. To accomodate the changes, we've published with three separate lists; Purchase, Repayment and Final Disposition. This format should be easier to work with rather than one large list where one might miss a Transaction.

We hope you find the content useful. As always, feel free to provide comments or suggestions on how we can improve iBanknet.com.

Thank-you,
Chris and Marian

Tabbing over to SEC Filings

Spring has sprung, which means it must be about time to freshen up our widgets! We haven't done any significant changes to the iBanknet widget since it was launched almost a year and a half ago, so it was about time to add some new functionality.

We've now added a new "SEC" (Securities and Exchange Commission) tab to the widget. At iBanknet.com, we’ve connected (or “mashed-up”) financial institutions to their SEC filings, giving you access to a “searched” Institutions SEC filings directly from the widget. So now you can retrieve an Institution’s latest filings, annual report, quarterly report and more from the widget. And then by clicking on the desired report, the widget will launch you directly into the filing at the SEC.

Our iBanknet widget, featured on our home page, lets you enter an Institution name then searches through our reports of over 22,000 financial institutions, returning a brief summary of financial facts. Clicking on the institution name takes you to more detailed information for that Institution. And then by clicking on the "News" tab, the widget will list top news headlines of the searched institution from Google News.

Best of all, you can even take the widget with you. You can add it to your blog or your Facebook page.

We find it very handy and hope you will too!

Publishing for the 4th quarter of 2008 is now complete – reports for all the Banks and Holding Companies are now available. As with the Thrifts and Credit Unions, we’ve added some enhancements to the Bank and Holding Company summary pages. The Fast Facts page is categorized into four sections; Institution Profile, Financial Reports, Financial Fast Facts and a chart of key items.

Holding Companies are categorized into three sub-types; Bank Holding Company, Bank Holding Company Large Parent and Bank Holding Company Small Parent. Banks meanwhile, are categorized into four sub-types; Banks with foreign offices, Domestic-only Banks, Foreign Branch Office (FBO) Banks and Non-Depository Trust Banks. The summary page information can vary depending on which type is viewed.

The Institution Profile section of the summary page provides non-financial information about the Holding Company or Bank. For Holding Companies we added the Year Opened, Institution Type, Reserve District, Federal Regulator, Entity Type, Structure, S-Corp indicator, SEC status, Fiscal Year-End and the External Auditor. For Banks we added the Year Opened, Institution Type, Entity Type, Federal Regulator, Structure, S-Corp indicator, Member Federal Reserve and FHLB indicators, Fiduciary Powers and if they’re exercised, Specialization, Statistical Area, Interstate and Foreign Offices indicators, Number of Offices and Number of Employees.

The Financial Reports section provides links to the Balance Sheet and Income Statements, as well as a link to the remaining reports for the period and to the historical reports. As well, we provide the complete call report in Excel format for each of the leading institutions for a small charge.

The Financial Fast Facts section provides some select financial numbers for the quarter. Both the Financial Fast Facts and the chart of Income Statement sections remained unchanged.

This completes a quick look at the changes we’ve implemented. We will be continuing to enhance the fast facts over the upcoming quarters, so stay tuned!

Part 2: Thrift Summary Page - New Layout, New Facts

Welcome to part 2 of our summary page enhancements, this time changes to the Thrift Fast Facts page. Similar to Credit Unions, the summary page is now clearly categorized into four sections; Institution Profile, Financial Reports, Financial Fast Facts and a chart of key items.

The Institution Profile section provides non-financial information about the Thrift. Several new facts were added including Year Opened, Institution Type, Charter Type, Federal Regulator, Specialization, Statistical Area (MSA), Number of Offices, Number of Deposit Accounts, Number of Retirement Deposit Accounts, Fiduciary Powers and a link to a list of Subordinate Organizations.

The Financial Reports section provides links to the Balance Sheet and Income Statements, as well as a link to the remaining reports for the period and to the historical reports. As a convenience and for a small charge, we provide the complete call report in Excel format for each of the leading institutions.

The Financial Fast Facts section provides detailed select financial numbers for the quarter. Three new facts were added to the Total Loans category, Loans Past Due (30 to 89 days) Loans Past Due (90 days) and Non Accrual Loans.

The chart of Income Statement items remains unchanged.

We should soon be publishing Holding Company and Bank reports for the quarter ended 2008-12-31. At the same time, we will be including new summary pages for the remaining institutions, loaded with new and interesting fast facts.

Stay tuned for parts 3 and 4 of the Fast Facts update!

The Credit Union Summary Page – New Layout, New Facts

We just published the Credit Union reports for the quarter ended 2008-12-31. At the same time we also modified the Fast Facts (summary page) for Credit Unions.

The summary page is now clearly categorized into four sections; Institution Profile, Financial Reports, Financial Fast Facts and a chart of key items.

The Institution Profile section provides non-financial information about the Credit Union. Several new facts were added including Year Opened, Institution Type, Credit Union Type, Federal Regulator, Membership Type, Statistical Area, Date of Last Audit and a link to the Credit Union Service Organizations (CUSO) report.

Two new facts were added to the Loans category, the Number of Loans YTD and Loans Amount YTD.

The chart of Income Statement items remains unchanged (for now).

Phew! That's the low-down on the changes. We also just published all Thrift reports for the quarter ended 2008-12-31 along with changes to the Thrift Fast Facts page. We'll detail those changes in a future blog post.

We find the new facts very interesting and hope you do too. Enjoy!

Colorful Changes

We recently applied a 'colorful' new feature to the site. A new icon, colored by institution type is now displayed throughout the website. The icon comes in four flavors; lavender (Holding Companies), green (Banks), orange (Thrifts) and blue (credit unions).

We always find it much easier to visually identify and categorize information by color rather than by having to read text. Since much of the site provides content for a mix of institution types, the new icons should hopefully make it easier to identify the type of institution that is displayed.

The icon's have been added to the Bank Explorer Widget, index page, left nav and the summary page of each individual institution. Additionally the icon is displayed for all state/counties and any lists which have a mix of institution types.

We hope you find that latest enhancements as colorful and useful as we do!

Our Capital Purchase Program List Has Changed

We originally only provided a list of the Capital Purchase Program (CPP) transactions of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) for two reasons. The first reason, it was the first program reported on by the Treasury. The second reason, our focus is on Financial Institutions.

Subsequently the Treasury released data on the Systemically Significant Failing Institutions. AIG at $40 Billion is the only participant.

In the New Year, the Treasury started to report on the Automotive Industry Financing Program. GM, GMAC, and Chrysler are the participants at $15.4 Billion. As well, the Treasury started to report on the Targeted Investment Program, Citigroup being the only participant at $20 Billion.

As the number of programs continues to grow, Marian and I decided we would keep our focus on Financial Institutions. So we renamed our Capital Purchase Program List to Troubled Asset Relief Program List and we will cover Financial Institutions participating in any of the Tarp programs.

We wanted to also take this moment to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Christmas Wrap-Up

It’s been awhile since we’ve written a blog. We’re well overdue. No excuses.

We’ve finished publishing Q3 2008. Our content for the quarter reflects the financial condition of 21,715 institutions. Marian tweaked the Bank Explorer Widget to improve the search speed – it certainly seems more responsive.

We noticed that this was the first quarter that Foreign Banking Organizations (FBO) started reporting Credit Default Swaps. So we decided to create a new FBO Credit Default Swap list. There are 32 Foreign Banking Organizations that reported approximately 82 billion dollars in notional amount as guarantor and 144 billion dollars in notional amount as Beneficiary.

As part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) was created. Currently TARP seems to have two components, the Capital Purchase Program and the Systemically Significant Failing Institutions. As of the writing of this blog; the Capital Purchase Program now has 116 completed transactions with 116 financial institutions for the amount of $167,756,852,000 and the Systemically Significant Failing Institutions has 1 completed transaction with AIG for the amount of $40,000,000.

We created a Capital Purchase Program list that allows you to sort by any of the columns and then drill through to the financials of any of the participants. We haven’t created a Systemically Significant Failing Institutions List because there is only one company participating.

That’s it for today, so Marian and I want to take this moment and wish you and your families Seasons Greetings.

Chris and Marian

OCC Announces First 'Shelf Charter'

It's been an interesting week for the economy.

Friday afternoon, an email arrived announcing the OCC had approved the establishment of the Ford Group Bank, NA. With the Big Three auto manufacturers requesting assistance from the Federal Government, I assumed that this was the formal approach for assistance.

Once I read the email however, I realized how the events of the week had distorted my perceptions.

The Ford Group Holdings, Inc. is a Texas based holding company for the Ford Group Bank NA. The Bank is being formed to assume liabilities and purchase assets from the FDIC when it is acting as a receiver of a depository institution. The Ford Group has 18 months to acquire/commence business, with a possible extension by the OCC. The link for the letter of approval is http://www.occ.gov/ftp/release/2008-137a.pdf
.

On Saturday, the Financial Times had an article, "US help for investor to buy ailing banks" by Joanna Chung and Saskia Scholtes, which briefly describes the new Shelf Charter. The article can be found at this link http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/4c68bf50-b82b-11dd-ac6d-0000779fd18c.html.

In the article, the charter is described as allowing private equity and investor groups to buy troubled or failed institutions. This new charter increases the pool of qualified buyers. The charter moves from a preliminary status to final status once acquisition is approved. The OCC will still ensure that the correct management will be in place and the bank is managed safe and soundly.

We hope this new charter will lead to smooth and successful transitions in the choppy waters ahead.
