Over the last few years we’ve put maps on our website. We started with static html maps, but it required a significant amount of work to create the area maps so people could click through to the data. Then we tried Flash-based maps. While many people have Flash installed, there are still some viewers who do not have Flash.

So I am currently evaluating Microsoft MapPoint. It integrates nicely with other Microsoft products. I’m not crazy about the visual appearance of the map (most Flash-based maps seem nicer), but they certainly integrate nicely with spreadsheets and databases.

I’ve always wondered what is the share of ‘Big Bank’ deposits in each state and where each of the ‘Big Banks’ is dominant. So I did a few queries against the FDIC deposit data and produced a Sized Pie Chart Map. When you click on a Pie Chart, you will be launched to a state summary page. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I will be silent, and let you examine the map.

BTW, I’m going to ask Santa Claus for a copy of MapPoint, and I look forward to adding more data oriented maps to iBanknet.com in the New Year.

Seasons Greetings and Our Best Wishes to You for a Happy and Healthy 2011.

Chris and Marian.

First Michigan Bank – A De Novo Succeeding

I was working on our failed bank report when I noticed something interesting. One of the institutions acquiring a failed bank had a somewhat high Federal Reserve RSSD ID number which indicates that it is a fairly new institution.

When about a quarter of all the financial institution failures since 2008 (85 of 366 institutions) are institutions that were established after the year 2000, First Michigan Bank is bucking that trend.

Established in August of 2007, First Michigan Bank has had tremendous growth over this turbulent financial period. At the end of Q2/2010, The First Michigan Bank was the 14th largest Michigan based financial institution (6th largest Bank). A significant portion of the First Michigan Bank’s growth came when it assumed CF Bancorp, a bank failure in April 2010.

Then, this Friday, November 19, 2010, First Michigan Bank(Troy, Michigan – Assets $1,306 million, Deposits $1,073 million, 25 branches) assumed all the deposits and most of the assets of First Banking Center(Burlington, Wisconsin – Assets $750 million, Deposits 664.8 million, 17 Branches).

It’s pretty amazing to watch a bank grow from 1 branch and to over 40 branches and billions in assets so quickly in today’s economy. Congratulations to the management team.

We’ve started updating the individual institution pages to track changes in Call Report filings, I noticed that the FDIC had released filing updates for First Michigan Bank on November 16th and November 18th.

Earlier this year, a Michigan based credit union, Michigan First Credit Union, filed a trademark infringement against First Michigan Bank (http://thefinancialbrand.com/12628/first-michigan-first-trademark-lawsuit/). In October, the two institutions reached an agreement. Now that First Michigan Bank has become a multi-state institution, I wonder if a name change will occur, as it is always more difficult to market into a region (Wisconsin) with a regional name (Michigan) outside of that geographic area.

Chris
